Prologue: Waters of Meribah /8:03 AM
For once, I decided to post a little story on my blog & I sincerely hope that someone would read it. For my dearest of friends, you may find bits of this story familiar in one way or another. But don't worry too much, I'm just trying out a creative way to express myself. If anyone has any comments, feel free to leave them.
Blurb:
As long as anyone can remember, the city of Meribah has been covered in an eternal shower of water. Merlin, disturbed by the way her god-sister left, decides to uncover the history of the city along with a very special friend.
* Disclaimer: While I do know many people who happen to go by the name of 'Joshua', the 'Joshua' that I am about to portray in this story if so happens to, isn't meant to resemble any of those 'Joshua's that I know. And by reading on, you may guess (if you have the advantage of knowing me well enough) the significance of the name in the story itself.
Pleasant reading.
Prologue
Lint was stuck in the basement for a couple of days fixing the spills that refused to be fixed.
The Ebony Stacks weren't near the main canal, but a fairly large drain slipped through the high-rise apartments on either side, dividing them and forming a water street. There were basements too, under the pavement. Most of them were dull and damp and prone to spills. During the rainy season, the water from the main drain tended to run over the pavement and dribble down where it wasn't meant to go.
A couple of people had tried persuading Lint to get out of the basement. It was flooding- that much was obvious. One of these particularly concerned souls was my Daddy. He dragged his god-daughter from the leaking hole and back to our house that night.
"Wait till the rain dies down before you fix those spills", he advised her.
I was passing the room in which the three of them sat, Daddy, Lint and Joshua. He was not very far away, just hovering about. While I could not make out what Joshua was feeling, I knew that Lint wore an expression which suggested that her face had been rolled over with whitewash. Her very thin frame appeared somewhat fragile and flaky that day and her eyes bulged from being overexposed to the water.
We all did our best to keep Lint from the basements of the Ebony stacks, because we all knew it wasn't good for her... Honestly. Grandma cooked her delicious food and the rest of us smiled and smiled, hoping that our happiness would be infectious.
But it just so happened that the day Lint returned to the basement, our infectious smiling turned into an infection of some other kind.
Something had been tugging at the back of my mind when I arrived in school at about nine in the morning. I had forgotten something... I often did. I sat and thought to myself: What in the world could I have forgotten? It concerned my sister Erin... if only I could place my finger on it... today it was a special day for her. That was it! It was her birthday! And to think I had run out of the house without even wishing her so!
I turned to my friend sitting on my right. "Erin isn't going to have a happy birthday today", I spoke in a soft serious tone. "I forgot to wish her a happy birthday."
My friend blinked. "It's alright", she soothed, "You can always wish her when you get home." Her kind smile assured me.
But nothing was alright when I got home that day. Although I retired from school with one stupid ugly grin plastered onto my face, I soon found that it wouldn't remain. Mum was lying in bed puffy eyed and I knew that something had gone wrong. She called me to the bedside, wiping her tearstained face with her bony fingers. Already, as I watched her, my heart had raced its way up my throat and was thumping against my teeth. What had happened? Was was she crying?
Mum's voice rattled as she broke the news to me.
"Lint drowned," she said.
And in an instant, my entire world came crashing down around me.
To be continued...
